Dear Brothers and Sisters, Prayer will be held at the Burke home.
Our scripture study will focus on Joel 2:18-32 where the prophet speaks of the Lord’s zeal in the times of outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Joel begins this section with the words, “the Lord will be zealous for His land, and pity His people.”
The word, that qualifies the “Lord’s zeal,” is “pity,” which means mercy.
Here is a note from Mike Davenport about the songs for Sunday: “After the opening hymn, the four songs focus on repentance (our Psalm), the grace of God (By Grace Alone), the coming of and work of the Spirit (Come, Holy Spirit, Come) and the salvation of God through Christ (Immovable Our Hope Remains) – the topics of the first two chapters of Joel.
With the passage before us, I felt we should sing about the work of the Holy Spirit. As I went through our song list, I was struck with the fact that not one song (as best as I could tell) focused on the Spirit. There were a few dealing with the Trinity, but none specific to the Spirit. As He is the one Person of the Godhead most often overlooked, I felt this a good time to learn a new song about the Spirit. There are quite a few good ones in the Trinity Hymnal regarding the Spirit – and most are fitting as the song leading into the preaching of the Word of God. So I have attached a midi file for that new hymn – it is a simple tune. We can work on it Wednesday night at prayer meeting if you so desire.”
The songs are as follows:
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heav’n, to earth come down!
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion;
Pure, unbounded love Thou art.
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find the promised rest.
Take away our bent to sinning;
Alpha and Omega be.
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty, to deliver;
Let us all Thy life receive.
Suddenly return, and never,
Nevermore Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing
Glory in Thy perfect love
Finish then Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee:
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heav’n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love and praise.
Psalm 51
God, be merciful to me,
On thy grace I rest my plea;
Plenteous in compassion thou,
Blot out my transgressions now;
Wash me, make me pure within,
Cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin.
My transgressions I confess,
Grief and guilt my soul oppress;
I have sinned against thy grace
And provoked thee to thy face;
I confess thy judgment just,
Speechless, I thy mercy trust.
I am evil, born in sin;
Thou desirest truth within.
Thou alone my Saviour art,
Teach thy wisdom to my heart;
Make me pure, thy grace bestow,
Wash me whiter than the snow.
Broken, humbled to the dust
By thy wrath and judgment just,
Let my contrite heart rejoice
And in gladness hear thy voice;
From my sins O hide thy face,
Blot them out in boundless grace.
Gracious God, my heart renew,
Make my spirit right and true;
Cast me not away from thee,
Let thy Spirit dwell in me;
Thy salvation’s joy impart,
Steadfast make my willing heart.
Sinners then shall learn from me
And return, O God, to thee;
Saviour, all my guilt remove,
And my tongue shall sing thy love;
Touch my silent lips, O Lord,
And my mouth shall praise accord.
By Grace Alone
Out of the depths I cry to You,
Lord, hear my voice of pleading;
Bend down Your gracious ear, I pray,
Your humble servant heeding.
If You remember each misdeed,
And of each thought and word take heed,
Who can remain before You?
Only by grace, by grace alone.
Your pardon is a gift of love,
Your grace alone must save us,
Our works will not remove our guilt,
The strictest life would fail us.
Let none in deeds or merits boast,
But let us own the Holy Ghost
For He alone can change us:
Only by grace, by grace alone.
Though great our sins and sore our woes
His grace much more aboundeth;
His helping love no limit knows,
Our utmost need it soundeth.
Our kind and faithful Shepherd He,
Who will set all His people free
From all their sin and sorrow:
Only by grace, by grace alone.
Come, Holy Spirit, Come (Listen to attached file)
Come, Holy Spirit, come;
Let thy bright beams arise;
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
Cheer our desponding hearts,
Thou heav’nly Paraclete;
Give us to lie with humble hope
At our Redeemer’s feet.
Revive our drooping faith;
Our doubts and fears remove;
And kindle in our breasts the flames
Of never-dying love.
Convince us of our sin;
Then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wond’ring view, reveal
The secret love of God.
‘Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in ev’ry part,
And new create the whole.
Dwell, therefore, in our hearts;
Our minds from bondage free;
Then we shall know and praise and love
The Father, Son, and Thee.
Immovable Our Hope Remains
Immovable our hope remains
Though shifting sands before us lie
The One who washed away our stains
Shall bear us safely to the skies
The floods may rise, the winds may beat
Torrential rains descend
Yet God His own will not forget
He’ll love and keep us till the end
You’ll love and keep us till the end
This is eternal life: to know
The living God and Christ, the Son
The Savior will not let us go
Until His saving work is done
Our debt was great, as was our need
But now the price is paid
Who can behold Immanuel bleed
And doubt His willingness to save?
We trust Your willingness to save
The Lord acquits, who can condemn?
Though Satan’s accusations fly
His pow’r can never reach our names
To blot them from the Book of Life
The Son has surely made us free
His Word forever stands
And all our joy is knowing we
Are graven on His wounded hands
We’re graven on Your wounded hands
Built into Christ, secure we stand
For with His Spirit we’ve been sealed
By grace we’ll see the promised land
Where every sorrow shall be healed
To God who gave His only Son
To Jesus Christ, our Lord
To God the Spirit, Three-in-one
Be songs of praise forevermore
We’ll sing Your praise forevermore
