This Week at Hope – He is preferred before me
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Much of our angst would disappear if we cared less who got the credit… Our stress levels would decrease if we quit trying to appear so successful. But, further, our angst would turn to joy and our problems would turn into marvelous opportunities If we desired that Jesus Christ would be exalted – that He would increase and we would decrease – that He would be “preferred before me.” In our scripture focus this week, John 1:19-28, we encounter a delegation from the priests and Levites. They came to examine John the Baptist. At that moment, he had a wonderful opportunity to exalt himself. Things were going well. People were flocking to hear him. He was experiencing remarkable success. Instead, John does what John always does – He exalts Jesus Christ and puts himself low. He sees only one purpose in life – to be a voice that exalts Jesus.
