    This Week at Hope: Christ Is the End of the Law

    September 17, 2019
    17 Sep 2019
    Dear brothers and sisters,

    This
     Sunday we will be continuing our study of the law of God – a necessary topic under the umbrella of our series on the Ten Commandments. Our text will be Romans 9:30 – 10:4. The last verse in our text states:  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

    Before we jump in to consider what the law of God is, it is important to establish what it isn’t. Samuel Bolton said it well:  ‘Live as though there were no Gospel; die as though there were no law. Pass the time of this life in the wilderness of this world under the conduct of Moses; but let none but Joshua bring you over into Canaan, the promised land.’ May it never be true of any of us, that we are looking to the law for the purpose of establishing a righteousness of our own.

    Ladies, do remember that Women’s Mentoring is happening tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at the Brown’s.

    Wednesday evening prayer will also be held at the Brown’s Barn.

    Our brother Paul will be bringing a message on Abortion: War on the Unborn this Sunday afternoon.

    Please pray for Scott and the NCFIC crew as they host the West-coast conference in Seattle this weekend. Scott leaves for Seattle tomorrow. Our own East-coast conference in Asheville is about five weeks away. Please see the email from earlier today regarding the importance of the conference and how to go about getting financial assistance if it is needed.

    Songs for Sunday are as follows:
    •    To God All Praise and Glory
    •    All I Have Is Christ
    •    By Grace Alone

    This Week at Hope – I Am The Way

    September 10, 2019
    10 Sep 2019

    Brothers and Sisters,

    What do you do when things are coming unglued? Where will you go when you lose something or someone you’ve grown to love? This is the condition of Jesus disciples in the upper room. They are ‘troubled,” as a result of the troubling news that He is leaving and one of them is a traitor. They are confused, agitated and worried.

    Our scripture text for Sunday contains one of the best-known verses in the Bible, “Let not your heart be troubled” (John 14:1), and one of the clearest declarations of the Gospel. From this section in the Gospel of John, (John 14-17), we find that Jesus deepest and most comforting teaching comes at the moment of His disciples greatest disturbance. His deepest teaching meets them at their deepest and darkest hour.

    Jesus is preparing his disciples for the work if the ministry in this world from the moment to the day they die and for an eternity in heaven. He comforts them with three realities: A promise of heaven (v1-4), the way to heaven (v5-7) and how to live until you get too heaven (v8-14).

    For the afternoon teaching, Scott Brown will continue the series on “Social Justice.”

    Remember that Sovereign Redeemer Community Church will be joining us for worship and the fellowship meal on Sunday morning.

    Prayer this week will be held at the Noah’s, 5612 Pine Rock Court, Wake Forest

    The songs we will be singing are here:

    • Doxology / Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
    • I Love to Tell the Story
    • Only Trust Him
    • Complete In Thee
    • Emmanuel’s Land

    Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
    What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

       Leaning, leaning,
    Safe and secure from all alarms
    Leaning, leaning,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

    O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    O how bright the path grows from day to day,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

    What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

    I Love to Tell the Story
    I love to tell the story of unseen things above
    Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love
    I love to tell the story because I know ’tis true
    It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do
    I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory
    To tell the old, old story, of Jesus and His love

    I love to tell the story; ‘Tis pleasant to repeat
    What seems each time I tell it more wonderfully sweet
    I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
    The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word
    I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory
    To tell the old old story, of Jesus and His love

    I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
    Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest
    And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song
    ‘Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long
    I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory
    To tell the old old story, of Jesus and His love

    Only Trust Him
    Come, every soul by sin oppressed
    There’s mercy with the Lord
    And He will surely give you rest
    By trusting in His Word

       Only trust Him; only trust Him
    Only trust Him now
    He will save you; He will save you
    He will save you now

    For Jesus shed His precious blood
    Rich blessings to bestow
    Plunge now into the crimson flood
    That washes white as snow

    Yes, Jesus is the Truth, the Way
    That leads you into rest
    Believe in Him without delay
    And you are fully blest

    Complete In Thee
    Complete in Thee, no work of mine
    Could take, dear Lord, the place of Thine.
    Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
    And I shall stand complete in Thee!

    Yea, justified, oh blessed thought!
    And sanctified salvation-wrought!
    Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
    And glorified I, too, shall be.

    Complete in Thee, each want supplied,
    And no good thing to me denied,
    Since Thou my portion, Lord, will be,
    I ask no more, complete in Thee!

    Complete in Thee, no more shall sin
    Thy grace has conquered reign within;
    Thy blood shall bid the tempter flee,
    And I shall stand complete in Thee!

    Dear Savior, when, before Thy bar,
    All tribes and tongues assembled are,
    Among the chosen I shall be,
    At Thy right hand, complete in Thee!

    Emmanuel’s Land
    The sands of time are sinking,
    The dawn of heaven breaks,
    The summer morn I’ve sighed for,
    The fair sweet morn awakes;
    Dark, dark, hath been the midnight,
    But dayspring is at hand,
    And glory, glory dwelleth
    In Emmanuel’s land.

    The King there in His beauty
    Without a veil is seen;
    It were a well-spent journey
    Though seven deaths lay between:
    The Lamb with His fair army
    Doth on Mount Zion stand,
    And glory, glory dwelleth
    In Emmanuel’s land.

    O Christ, He is the fountain,
    The deep sweet well of love!
    The streams on earth I’ve tasted
    More deep I’ll drink above:
    There to an ocean fullness
    His mercy doth expand,
    And glory, glory dwelleth
    In Emmanuel’s land.

    The bride eyes not her garment,
    But her dear bridegroom’s face;
    I will not gaze at glory,
    But on my King of grace;
    Not at the crown He gifteth,
    But on His pierced hand:
    The Lamb is all the glory
    Of Emmanuel’s land.

    This Week at Hope: Ruth 3 – Covenant Faithfulness

    September 4, 2019
    04 Sep 2019
    Dear brothers & sisters,
    This Sunday we will come to the most hotly debated and contested part of the book of Ruth – chapter 3.  Many moderns commentators think that the author of Ruth is trying to delicately cover up an immoral encounter between Ruth and Boaz, which is wrong seeing that one of the themes of Ruth is integrity and virtue (moral excellence, see: 11 for example).  For now, we can settle it in our hearts that Naomi’s plan is definitely not a prescription for us to follow with our daughters, regardless of a suitor’s character.  So what is this chapter about?
    Chapter 3 is really the exercise of covenant faith on Ruth’s part and covenant faithfulness on the part of Boaz.  As we trace the covenant kindness of Boaz through the chapter, it is hard not to see glimpses of our Savior.  Naomi seeks “security” (:1, really “rest”) for Ruth in Boaz.  Rather than seeking her own will (:10), Ruth demonstrates her love for God yet again, submits wholeheartedly to His law, and asks Boaz to carry out the role of kinsman-redeemer according to Yahweh’s word.  “Take your maidservant under your wing…” (:9).  Boaz makes his commitment to carry out the task, “as the Lord lives!” (:10)
    What can we learn?  Many things are buried in this chapter.  The beauty of laying hold of God’s word and promises, the trait of virtue, and our God’s demonstration of covenant faithfulness.  Also, the same lesson Christ taught us becomes crystal clear: “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Matt 10:39)
    Using the people in this book as His canvas, their dark providences and troubles, their character and victories, the Lord produce a masterpiece for the ages.
    This Wednesday, prayer will be at the Burke home.
    On Sunday, we will have the privilege of hearing the testimony and witnessing the baptism of Hudson Keith (it will be done over at the Brown’s pond).
    For our Sunday afternoon teaching time, our brother Mike Davenport will be bringing teaching on one of the imprecatory psalms – Psalm 58.

    Our songs for this Sunday are:

    Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah

    Creator God, Our Sovereign Lord

    Looking forward to seeing you and worshiping with you this Lord’s day.

    This Week at Hope – Love One Another as I Have Loved You

    August 28, 2019
    28 Aug 2019

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

    Our scripture focus this week is a section from the beginning of the “upper room discourse,” John 13:31-38. Chapters 13-17 is a very unusual section since they all take place in one night. In our text for Sunday, Judas has departed, and now Jesus is having a very personal, private, intimate, extended time with His disciples. Jesus speaks to them about what is it that marks His kingdom and the character of life in Him? There are three things He mentions three things, His glory, His expressed in love for one another and His persevering grace.

    For the Sunday afternoon, teaching will continue our series on Social Justice, focusing on movements of “Gender Justice.”

    Prayer will be held at the Noah’s

    Just a reminder… All Church Picnic is Monday 11:00-3:00 at the Brown’s Farm.

    On Singing Together:
    Are your little children singing in church? Because it is a learned skill, parents need to teach their children to sing. It is very important that you intentionally and diligently and patiently teach your children to sing in church.
    Here are three ways to take action:
    1. Each week, sing the first verse of the songs for the upcoming Sunday at home. At Hope, we send the words to the songs on Tuesday or Wed each week. This will help them familiarize with the tunes and the words… then when you get to church to sing them, they have an idea for how the song is sung.
    2. Don’t allow them to be silent, and don’t allow them to dispassionately participate… they need to be engaged (by parental attentiveness) in the singing and taught to sing. For most children, it won’t come naturally, and if you don’t make it a requirement for them sing, they will do their own thing… which is not what we do among the gathered people of God.
    3. Teach your children that they have a responsibility to sing. If your kids are mumbling the songs or not singing at all, then you ought to teach them that they must sing. They don’t get to do their own thing in the church. Don’t let them be selfishly silent. God has commanded the gathered church to lift up their voices for the benefit of the whole church.
    Here are the songs we will be singing on Sunday. If you have little children one helpful technique is to teach your children the first verses of the songs upcoming for Sunday. Here are the songs coming this Sunday:

    Crown Him with Many Crowns
         (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INo42lyvszY)
    Wondrous King, All Glorious
         (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVCnaP7FBjE)

         (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVGE2R2wq5w)
    Here Is Love
         (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APrUPPC8bFY  –  2:18 mark)
    Reformation Hymn
         (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOmdVUX-wLw)

    Crown Him with Many Crowns
    Crown Him with many crowns
    The Lamb upon His throne
    Hark! how the heav’nly anthem drowns
    All music but its own!
    Awake, my soul, and sing
    Of Him who died for thee
    And hail Him as thy matchless King
    Thro’ all eternity

    Crown Him the Lord of Love!
    Behold His hands and side –
    Rich wounds, yet visible above
    In beauty glorified
    All hail, Redeemer, hail!
    For Thou Hast died for me
    Thy praise and glory shall not fail
    Thro’out eternity

    Crown Him the Lord of life!
    Who triumphed o’er the grave
    Who rose victorious in the strife
    For those He came to save
    His glories now we sing
    Who died and rose on high
    Who died eternal life to bring
    And lives that death may die

    Crown Him the Lord of Heav’n!
    One with the Father known
    One with the Spirit thro’ Him giv’n
    From yonder glorious throne
    To Thee be endless praise
    For Thou for us hast died
    Be Thou, O Lord, thro’ endless days
    Adored and magnified

    Wondrous King, All Glorious
    Wondrous King, all glorious,

    Sovereign Lord victorious,

O, receive our praise with favor!

    From Thee welled God’s kindness

    Though we in our blindness

Strayed from Thee, our blessed Saviour.

    Strengthen Thou,

    Help us now;

    Let our tongues be singing,

    Thee our praises bringing.

    Heavens, spread the story

    Of our Maker’s glory,

    All the pomp of earth obscuring.

    Sun, thy rays be sending,

    Thy bright beams expending,

    Light to all the earth assuring.

    Moon and star,

    Praise afar

Him who glorious made you;

    The vast heavens aid you.

    O my soul, rejoicing,

    Sing, thy praises voicing,

    Sing, with hymns of faith adore Him!

    All who here have being,

    Shout, your voices freeing,

    Bow down in the dust before Him.

    He is God

    Sabaoth;

Praise alone the Saviour,

    Here and there for ever.

    Hallelujahs render

    To the Lord most tender,

    Ye who know and love the Saviour.

    Hallelujahs sing ye,

Ye redeemed, O, bring ye

    Hearts that yield Him glad behavior.

    Blest are ye

    Endlessly;

Sinless there for ever,

    Ye shall laud Him ever.

    Blest Be the Tie that Binds
    Blest be the tie that binds
    Our hearts in Christian love:
    The fellowship of kindred minds
    Is like to that above.

    Before our Father’s throne
    We pour our ardent prayers;
    Our fears, our hopes, our aims, are one,
    Our comforts and our cares.

    We share our mutual woes,
    Our mutual burdens bear,
    And often for each other flows
    The sympathizing tear.

    When we asunder part,
    It gives us inward pain;
    But we shall still be joined in heart,
    And hope to meet again.

    This glorious hope revives
    Our courage by the way,
    While each in expectation lives,
    And longs to see the day.

    From sorrow, toil and pain,
    And sin, we shall be free;
    And perfect love and friendship reign
    Through all eternity.

    Here Is Love
    Here is love, vast as the ocean,
    Lovingkindness as the flood,
    When the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
    Shed for us His precious blood.
    Who His love will not remember?
    Who can cease to sing His praise?
    He can never be forgotten,
    Throughout Heav’n’s eternal days.

    On the mount of crucifixion,
    Fountains opened deep and wide;
    Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
    Flowed a vast and gracious tide.
    Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
    Poured incessant from above,
    And Heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
    Kissed a guilty world in love.

    Let me all Thy love accepting,
    Love Thee, ever all my days;
    Let me seek Thy kingdom only
    And my life be to Thy praise;
    Thou alone shalt be my glory,
    Nothing in the world I see.
    Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me,
    Thou Thyself hast set me free.

    In Thy truth Thou dost direct me
    By Thy Spirit through Thy Word;
    And Thy grace my need is meeting,
    As I trust in Thee, my Lord.
    Of Thy fullness Thou art pouring
    Thy great love and power on me,
    Without measure, full and boundless,
    Drawing out my heart to Thee.

    Reformation Hymn
    We will trust God’s Word alone,
    Where His perfect will is known;
    Our traditions shift like sand
    While His Truth forever stands.

    We will live by faith alone,
    Clothed in merit not our own;
    All we claim is Jesus Christ
    And His finished sacrifice.

       Glory be, glory be to God alone
    Through the church He redeemed
    and made His own.
    He has freed us, He will keep us
    till we’re safely home
    Glory be, glory be to God alone!

    We are saved by grace alone –
    Undeserved, yet freely shown;
    No accomplishment on earth
    Can achieve the second birth.

    We will stand on Christ alone,
    The unyielding Cornerstone;
    Nations rage and devils roar,
    Still He reigns forevermore!

       Glory be, glory be to God alone
    Through the church He redeemed
    and made His own.
    He has freed us, He will keep us
    till we’re safely home
    Glory be, glory be to God alone!

    This Week at Hope – The Perfect Law of the Lord

    August 21, 2019
    21 Aug 2019
    Dear brothers and sisters, if you recall, our study in Ecclesiastes ended with a consideration of Solomon’s “conclusion of the whole matter”: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil. This Sunday I plan to begin a series on the Ten Commandments. Before we jump into Exodus 20, we will spend several messages considering the law of God.

    Can I ask you a few questions? How do you feel about that? Does that sound exciting to you? or boring? Are you concerned about what you might hear? or grateful that we will be spending time contemplating these commandments? When was the last time you heard a series on the commandments? Is there something you are hoping to hear? or maybe something you are dreading to hear? Do you even consider the Decalogue still relevant or applicable? Can a study of these commandments prove to be profitable?

    I ask these questions because much confusion has abounded and still abounds regarding the Ten Commandments and the law of God. The culture around us has almost completely removed every remnant of them from courtrooms and other public places. And I am afraid that the church in America has practically ‘removed’ them as well – not necessarily from their walls but certainly from their pulpits. And in other churches, where they are still sounded from the pulpit, they have literally replaced the gospel and have been set up as a covenant of works.
    If we ignore them, we must consider what is at stake – Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (1 John 2:3-6). Yet, if we handle them but do incorrectly, we are apt to fall into one of the ditches on either side of the law – antinomianism or legalism. We need the Holy Spirit to give us a right understanding.
    Wednesday evening prayer this week will be at the Brown’s Barn.
    This Sunday we will not be having our typical afternoon message. We will be gathering back at the church building at 6:30 pm with our brethren from Sovereign Redeemer for a Hold the Rope update and time of singing together. In an email I received today, Paul brought the following to my attention – “Hard to believe today marks 90 days from our Nov 19 departure!”  We have much to rejoice over and much to pray for.

    Be sure to respond to the email that went out regarding the church picnic on Labor Day. Timely response and accurate headcount are helpful for preparations.
    Songs for Sunday are as follows:
         O Worship the King
         Trust and Obey
         Thy Perfect Law Exposeth Me (doxology)
         Ancient Words
         O Church Arise

    Here are the songs we are singing on Sunday

    Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
    The Church’s One Foundation
    All The Way My Savior Leads Me
    O Church, Arise
    Like a River Glorious

    Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
    Love divine, all loves excelling,
    Joy of heav’n, to earth come down!
    Fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
    All Thy faithful mercies crown.
    Jesus, Thou art all compassion;
    Pure, unbounded love Thou art.
    Visit us with Thy salvation;
    Enter every trembling heart.

    Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
    Into every troubled breast!
    Let us all in Thee inherit;
    Let us find the promised rest.
    Take away our bent to sinning;
    Alpha and Omega be.
    End of faith, as its beginning,
    Set our hearts at liberty.

    Come, Almighty, to deliver;
    Let us all Thy life receive.
    Suddenly return, and never,
    Nevermore Thy temples leave.
    Thee we would be always blessing
    Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
    Pray and praise Thee without ceasing
    Glory in Thy perfect love

    Finish then Thy new creation;
    Pure and spotless let us be.
    Let us see Thy great salvation
    Perfectly restored in Thee:
    Changed from glory into glory,
    Till in heav’n we take our place,
    Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
    Lost in wonder, love and praise.

    The Church’s One Foundation
    The Church’s one foundation
    Is Jesus Christ her Lord
    She is His new creation
    By water and the Word
    From heav’n He came and sought her
    To be His holy bride
    With His own blood He bought her
    And for her life He died

    Elect from every nation
    Yet one o’er all the earth
    Her charter of salvation:
    One Lord, one faith, one birth
    One holy Name she blesses,
    Partakes one holy food
    And to one hope she presses
    With every grace endued

    The Church shall never perish!
    Her dear Lord to defend,
    To guide, sustain, and cherish,
    Is with her to the end:
    Though there be those who hate her,
    And false sons in her pale,
    Against both foe or traitor
    She ever shall prevail.

    Though with a scornful wonder
    Men see her sore oppressed,
    By schisms rent asunder,
    By heresies distressed:
    Yet saints their watch are keeping,
    Their cry goes up, ‘How long?’
    And soon the night of weeping
    Shall be the morn of song!

    ‘Mid toil and tribulation
    And tumult of her war
    She waits the consummation
    Of peace forevermore
    Till with the vision glorious
    Her longing eyes are blessed
    And the great Church victorious
    Shall be the Church at rest

    Yet she on earth hath union
    With God the Three in One,
    And mystic sweet communion
    With those whose rest is won,
    With all her sons and daughters
    Who, by the Master’s hand
    Led through the deathly waters,
    Repose in Eden land.

    O happy ones and holy!
    Lord, give us grace that we
    Like them, the meek and lowly,
    On high may dwell with Thee:
    There, past the border mountains,
    Where in sweet vales the Bride
    With Thee by living fountains
    Forever shall abide!

    All The Way My Savior Leads Me
    All the way my Savior leads me
    What have I to ask beside?
    Can I doubt His tender mercy
    Who through life has been my Guide
    Heavenly peace, divinest comfort
    Here by faith in Him to dwell
    For I know what e’er befall me
    Jesus doeth all things well
    For I know what e’er befall me
    Jesus doeth all things well

    All the way my Savior leads me
    Cheers each winding path I tread
    Gives me grace for every trial
    Feeds me with the living bread
    Though my weary steps may falter
    And my soul a thirst may be
    Gushing from the rock before me
    Lo, a spring of joy I see
    Gushing from the rock before me
    Lo, a spring of joy I see

    All the way my Savior leads me
    O the fullness of His love
    Perfect rest to me is promised
    In my Father’s house above
    When my spirit clothed immortal
    Wings its flight to realms of day
    This my song through endless ages
    Jesus lead me all the way
    This my song through endless ages
    Jesus lead me all the way

    O Church, Arise
    O church, arise and put your armor on
    Hear the call of Christ our Captain
    For now the weak can say that they are strong
    In the strength that God has given
    With shield of faith and belt of truth
    We’ll stand against the devil’s lies
    An army bold whose battle cry is Love
    Reaching out to those in darkness

    Our call to war to love the captive soul
    But to rage against the captor
    And with the sword that makes the wounded whole
    We will fight with faith and valor
    When faced with trials on every side
    We know the outcome is secure
    And Christ will have the prize for which He died
    An inheritance of nations

    Come see the cross where love and mercy meet
    As the Son of God is stricken
    Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet
    For the Conqueror has risen
    And as the stone is rolled away
    And Christ emerges from the grave
    This victory march continues till the day
    Every eye and heart shall see Him

    So Spirit come put strength in every stride
    Give grace for every hurdle
    That we may run with faith to win the prize
    Of a servant good and faithful
    As saints of old still line the way
    Retelling triumphs of His grace
    We hear their calls and hunger for the day
    When with Christ we stand in Glory

    Like a River Glorious
    Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
    Over all victorious in its bright increase;
    Perfect, yet it floweth fuller ev’ry day,
    Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.

       Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest,
    Finding, as He promised,
    Perfect peace and rest.

    Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
    Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
    Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
    Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.

    Ev’ry joy or trial falleth from above,
    Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love.
    We may trust Him fully all for us to do;
    They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.

    This Week at Hope: The Matchless Grace of the Redeemer – Ruth 2

    August 7, 2019
    07 Aug 2019
    Hello brothers & sisters,
    Charles Simeon, 18th century pastor, encouraged his saints to never think their circumstances beyond hope when they have Jehovah as their God: “For as the bondage and imprisonment of Joseph were steps to his highest exaltation, so may our heaviest afflictions be the appointed means of bringing us to the most exalted good.”

    As we go through Ruth chapter 2, we are introduced one of the most sterling characters of the Old Testament – Boaz (:1).  After the intense loss in the lives of Naomi and Ruth, God has arranged a meeting between this man and the Moabitess.
    In Boaz, we see one of the clearest pictures of free grace that foreshadow the coming of our Lord Jesus (Luke 4:18-19).  This “man of great wealth” lowers himself to speak, not with one of his workers, but with one of the gleaners.  He speaks kindly to Ruth the Moabitess, promises to protect her from harm, quench her thirst from the well and provide for her.  From a heart of sheer kindness, he loads her with benefits beyond any expectation, even inviting her to his table.  Sound familiar?  This is what happens when you come to the “Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” (:12). Ruth is overwhelmed.
    When she gets home that evening, Naomi is amazed at the blessings: “Where have you gleaned today?” (:19).  Oh, that the lives of the redeemed in our local church would bring about such a question from a watching world that cannot but help ask about the hope that lies within us.  All the misery of chapter 1 is about to swallowed up by a foreshadowing of Christ in Boaz, the kinsman redeemer.

    Prayer on Wednesday night will be held at the Browns’.

    On Sunday afternoon, as we continue to look at Social Justice, Scott Brown will be giving a short talk on “How Should We think about Race and Ethnicity.”
    Our songs for this coming Sunday are:
    To God All Praise and Glory
    O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
    Irresistible Grace
    I Will Glory in My Redeemer
    Amazing Grace
    May the Lord bless the rest of your week.

    This Week at Hope – Christ-less Christianity in the Upper Room

    July 30, 2019
    30 Jul 2019
    Brothers and Sisters,

    Involvement in Christianity and loving Christ can be two very different things. This was the case for Judas. He had a ministry, a “schtick,” a lifestyle, an angle, a reputation, an identity but not Christ. He had a Christ-less Christianity. Our scripture focus this week, John 13:18-30 shows a dramatic example of this in the story of the betrayal of Judas, and how no one thought he would be the one. As we progress in the Gospel of John, we find ourselves at the headwaters of a long section – five chapters that cover the final 24 hours of Jesus earthly life. He is speaking to His disciples… if you have a red letter bible, you will notice that most of the words are red.
    Prayer on Wed night will be held at Ash and Sona Noah’s home – 7:00pm.
    The funeral for Rick Muse is scheduled for Saturday, August 3, at 11:00 at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Road, Raleigh.
    On Sunday afternoon at 1:30, Scott Brown will continue the series on Social Justice.
    We will be singing these songs together on Sunday
    ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
    Jesus! what a Friend for Sinners!
    Rock of Ages
    He Will Hold Me Fast
    Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour
    ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
    ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
    Just to take Him at His Word
    Just to rest upon His promise
    Just to know:  ‘Thus saith the Lord’

       Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
    How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
    Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
    O for grace to trust Him more

    O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
    Just to take Him at His Word,
    Just in simple faith to plunge me
    Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

    Yes, tis sweet, to trust in Jesus
    Just from sin and self to cease
    Just from Jesus simply taking
    Life and rest, and joy and peace

    I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee
    Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend
    And I know that Thou art with me
    Wilt be with me to the end

    Jesus! what a Friend for Sinners!
    Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!
    Jesus! Lover of my soul;
    Friends may fail me, foes assail me,
    He, my Saviour, makes me whole.

       Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
    Hallelujah, what a Friend!
    Saving, helping, keeping, loving,
    He is with me to the end.

    Jesus! what a strength in weakness!
    Let me hide myself in Him;
    Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
    He, my strength, my vict’ry wins.

    Jesus! what a help in sorrow!
    While the billows o’er me roll,
    Even when my heart is breaking,
    He, my comfort, helps my soul.

    Jesus! what a guide and keeper!
    While the tempest still is high,
    Storms about me, night o’ertakes me,
    He, my pilot, hears my cry.

    Jesus! I do now receive Him,
    More than all in Him I find,
    He hath granted me forgiveness,
    I am His, and He is mine.

    Rock of Ages
    Rock of Ages, cleft for me
    Let me hide myself in Thee
    Let the water and the blood
    From Thy wounded side which flowed
    Be of sin the double cure
    Save from wrath and make me pure

    All the labors of my hands
    Could not meet Thy law’s demands
    Could my zeal no respite know
    Could my tears forever flow
    All for sin could not atone
    Thou must save, and Thou alone

    Nothing in my hands I bring
    Simply to Thy cross I cling
    Naked, come to Thee for dress
    Helpless, look to Thee for grace
    To Thy fountain, Lord I fly
    Wash me Savior, or I die

    While I draw this fleeting breath
    When my eyes shall close in death
    When I soar to worlds unknown
    See Thee on Thy judgment throne
    Rock of Ages, cleft for me
    Let me hide myself in Thee!

    He Will Hold Me Fast
    When I fear my faith will fail,
    Christ will hold me fast;
    When the tempter would prevail,
    He will hold me fast.
    I could never keep my hold
    Through life’s fearful path;
    For my love is often cold;
    He must hold me fast.

       He will hold me fast,
    He will hold me fast;
    For my Savior loves me so,
    He will hold me fast.

    Those He saves are His delight,
    Christ will hold me fast;
    Precious in His holy sight,
    He will hold me fast.
    He’ll not let my soul be lost;
    His promises shall last;
    Bought by Him at such a cost,
    He will hold me fast.

    For my life He bled and died,
    Christ will hold me fast;
    Justice has been satisfied;
    He will hold me fast.
    Raised with Him to endless life,
    He will hold me fast
    ‘Till our faith is turned to sight,
    When He comes at last!

    Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour
    Pass me not, O gentle Saviour,
    Hear my humble cry;
    While on others Thou art smiling,
    Do not pass me by.

       Saviour, Saviour, hear my humble cry;
    While on others Thou art calling,
    Do not pass me by.

    Let me at a throne of mercy
    Find a sweet relief;
    Kneeling there in deep contrition,
    Help my unbelief.

    Trusting only in Thy merit,
    Would I seek Thy face;
    Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
    Save me by Thy grace.

    Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
    More than life to me,
    Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
    Whom in heav’n but Thee?

    This Week at Hope – Blessed are You IF you do them

    July 23, 2019
    23 Jul 2019

    This week, prayer will be held at the Burke home.

    A humble church is a happy church. In John 13:1-17, we find one of the most remarkable and far reaching teaching moments in the life of Jesus and His disciples. First, He affirms His love for them, and then gives them an example of what kind of disciples He desires to send into the world – humble servants. He washes their feet and tells them to go do the same for their brethren. This is one of the foundations of a happy church for, “blessed (happy) are you if you do them” (John 13:17).

    On Sunday afternoon, I will begin our series on “Social Justice.” Modern movements are having profound influences for social and moral change – literally exchanging the glory of God for a lie. And all of us will be affected – especially the younger generation. For this reason we will be examining what the Bible says about Justice. What is Justice? How do we know what is just and by what standard? It is very important that we follow in the footsteps of Abraham whose mission was to teach his children justice, “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

    Please pray for Bridgette Holley in the wake of the death of her grandmother who raised her, and for the Burke Family, for Al Burke’s father has passed away in the Seattle area.

    Please pray for me and Robert Bosley as we are traveling to Paoli Indiana  o meet with a group of pastors on Wed and then speak at a conference. I’ll be home Saturday night.

    The songs we will be singing are:

    O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee

    When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

    I Asked the Lord that I Might Grow

    Speak, O Lord

    And Can It Be

    O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee
    O Lord, how shall I meet thee,
    How welcome thee aright?
    Thy people long to greet thee,
    My hope, my heart’s delight!
    O, kindle, Lord, most holy,
    Thy lamp within my breast
    To do in spirit lowly
    All that may please thee best.

    Love caused thine incarnation,
    Love brought thee down to me;
    Thy thirst for my salvation
    Procured my liberty.
    O love beyond all telling,
    That led thee to embrace,
    In love all love excelling,
    Our lost and fallen race!

    Rejoice, then, ye sad-hearted,
    Who sit in deepest gloom,
    Who mourn o’er joys departed
    And tremble at your doom.
    Despair not, he is near you,
    Yea, standing at the door,
    Who best can help and cheer you
    And bids you weep no more.

    Sin’s debt, that fearful burden,
    Let not your soul distress;
    Your guilt the Lord will pardon
    And cover by his grace.
    He comes, for men procuring
    The peace of sin forgiv’n,
    For all God’s sons securing
    Their heritage in heav’n.

    When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
    When I survey the wondrous cross
    On which the Prince of Glory died
    My richest gain I count but loss
    And pour contempt on all my pride

    Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
    Save in the death of Christ my God
    All the vain things that charm me most
    I sacrifice them to His blood

    See, from His head, His hands, His feet
    Sorrow and love flow mingled down
    Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
    Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

    Were the whole realm of nature mine
    That were a present far too small
    Love so amazing, so divine
    Demands my soul, my life, my all!

    I Asked the Lord that I Might Grow
    I asked the Lord that I might grow
    In faith and love and ev’ry grace,
    Might more of His salvation know,
    And seek more earnestly His face.

    ‘Twas He who taught me thus to pray,
    And He, I trust, has answered prayer,
    But it has been in such a way
    As almost drove me to despair.

    I hoped that in some favored hour
    At once He’d answer my request
    And, by His love’s constraining pow’r,
    Subdue my sins and give me rest.

    Instead of this, He made me feel
    The hidden evils of my heart
    And let the angry pow’rs of hell
    Assault my soul in ev’ry part.

    Yea, more with His own hand He seemed
    Intent to aggravate my woe,
    Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
    Humbled my heart and laid me low.

    “Lord, why is this,” I trembling cried;
    “Wilt Thou pursue Thy worm to death?”
    “‘Tis in this way,” the Lord replied,
    “I answer prayer for grace and faith.”

    “These inward tri-als I employ
    From self and pride to set thee free
    And break thy schemes of earthly joy
    That thou may’st find thy all in Me.”

    Speak, O Lord
    Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
    To receive the food of Your Holy Word.
    Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
    Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
    That the light of Christ might be seen today
    In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
    Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
    All Your purposes for Your glory.

    Teach us, Lord, full obedience,
    Holy reverence, true humility;
    Test our thoughts and our attitudes
    In the radiance of Your purity.
    Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see
    Your majestic love and authority.
    Words of pow’r that can never fail –
    Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

    Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
    Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us ñ
    Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
    That will echo down through eternity.
    And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises,
    And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
    Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built
    And the earth is filled with Your glory.

    And Can It Be
    And can it be that I should gain
    An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
    Died He for me, who caused His pain;
    For me, who Him to death pursued?
    Amazing love! how can it be
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.
    Amazing love! how can it be
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.

    He left His Father’s throne above,
    So free, so infinite His grace,
    Humbled Himself because of love
    And bled for all His chosen race.
    ëTis mercy all, immense and free
    For, O my God, it found out me.
    Amazing love! how can it be
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.

    Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
    Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
    Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray –
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light.
    My chains fell off; my heart was free.
    I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
    Amazing love! how can it be
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.

    No condemnation now I dread
    Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
    Alive in Him, my living Head,
    And clothed in righteousness divine
    Bold I approach th’eternal throne
    And claim the crown, thro’ Christ my own.
    Amazing love! how can it be
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me.

    This Week at Hope – He Who Believes in Me…

    July 17, 2019
    17 Jul 2019

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

    Prayer will be held at the Church at 6:30 and we are encouraging everyone to fast for the mission to Turkey.  We will be providing Pizza for dinner at 6:30.

    Our Sunday morning preaching focuses on John 12:42-50. This section contains Jesus final urgent appeal. After this final message, there will be no more public preaching from the mouth of Jesus. The events here take place sometime in the middle of passion week. There are two parts. First, the danger of the fear of man, v42-43. Second, Jesus final appeal, v44-50. Here is an outline:

    1. The danger of the fear of man, v42-43

    Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

    2. Jesus final message to the crowd, v44-50

    The blessings of the unity of the Father and the Son, v44-45, Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

    The rescue of the Light of the World, v46, I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

    The tragedy of disbelief, v47-48, And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him–the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

    The saving work in the submission of the Son to the Father, v49-50, For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak

    Sunday afternoon teaching will be brought by Paul Carrington – Psalm 46

    • Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
    • I Know Whom I Have Believed
    • Creator God, Our Sovereign Lord
    • Reformation Hymn
    • In Christ Alone

    Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
    Immortal, invisible, God only wise
    In light inaccessible hid from our eyes
    Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days
    Almighty, victorious – Thy great name we praise

    Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light
    Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might
    Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
    Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love

    To all, life Thou givest – to both great and small
    In all life Thou livest – the true life of all
    Thy wisdom so boundless, Thy mercy so free
    Eternal Thy goodness for naught changeth Thee

    Great Father of glory, pure Father of light
    Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight
    All praise we would render – O help us to see
    ‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

    I Know Whom I Have Believed
    I know not why God’s wondrous grace to me He hath made known
    Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for His own

       But I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able
    To keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day

    I know not how this saving faith to me He did impart
    Nor how believing in His Word wro’t peace within my heart

    I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing men of sin
    Revealing Jesus thro’ the Word, creating faith in Him

    I know not when my Lord may come, at night or noonday fair
    Nor if I’ll walk the vale with Him, or meet Him in the air

    Creator God, Our Sovereign Lord
    Creator God, our Sovereign Lord,
    The heavens tell, the stars have shown,
    Your splendor, might, and Deity,
    But Truth lies in Your Word alone.
    My heart to You, O God, I give,
    And by your Word I live.

    In Truth Your Word reveals my guilt,
    My lost, unworthy self makes known,
    But now made new I’m justified
    And live and move by Faith alone.
    My heart to You, O God, I give,
    And now by Faith I live.

    Before You made the world You chose,
    In love, to send Your only Son
    To ransom me and make me one
    With Christ, my Lord, by Grace alone.
    My heart to You, O God, I give,
    And now by Grace I live.

    O Christ, Redeemer, Savior, King,
    Subdued by grace, I am Your own;
    Enthrall my soul and make me free,
    Reformed, redeemed by Christ alone.
    My heart to You, O God, I give,
    And now in Christ I live.

    O glorious God, Who reigns on high,
    With heart in hand, before Your throne,
    We hymn Your glory ‘round the world
    With psalms adoring You alone.
    My heart to You, O God, I give,
    And for Your glory live.

    Reformation Hymn
    We will trust God’s Word alone,
    Where His perfect will is known;
    Our traditions shift like sand
    While His Truth forever stands.

    We will live by faith alone,
    Clothed in merit not our own;
    All we claim is Jesus Christ
    And His finished sacrifice.

      Glory be, glory be to God alone
    Through the church He redeemed
    and made His own.
    He has freed us, He will keep us
    till we’re safely home
    Glory be, glory be to God alone!

    We are saved by grace alone –
    Undeserved, yet freely shown;
    No accomplishment on earth
    Can achieve the second birth.

    We will stand on Christ alone,
    The unyielding Cornerstone;
    Nations rage and devils roar,
    Still He reigns forevermore!

       Glory be, glory be to God alone
    Through the church He redeemed
    and made His own.
    He has freed us, He will keep us
    till we’re safely home
    Glory be, glory be to God alone!

    In Christ Alone
    In Christ alone my hope is found
    He is my light, my strength, my song
    This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
    Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
    What heights of love, what depths of peace
    When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
    My Comforter, my All in All
    Here in the love of Christ I stand

    In Christ alone! – who took on flesh
    Fullness of God in helpless babe!
    This gift of love and righteousness
    Scorned by the ones He came to save
    Till on that cross as Jesus died
    The wrath of God was satisfied
    For every sin on Him was laid
    Here in the death of Christ I live

    There in the ground His body lay
    Light of the world by darkness slain
    Then bursting forth in glorious Day
    Up from the grave He rose again!
    And as He stands in victory
    Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
    For I am His and He is mine
    Bought with the precious blood of Christ

    No guilt in life, no fear in death
    This is the power of Christ in me
    From life’s first cry to final breath
    Jesus commands my destiny
    No power of hell, no scheme of man
    Can ever pluck me from His hand
    Till He returns or calls me home
    Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!
