This Week at Hope – The Gospel in Isaiah

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Don’t forget: We will be holding our church service under the tent on the Brown’s Farm on Sunday.

We have a remarkable privilege to hear a message on Sunday on the message of the gospel in Isaiah. Mike Davenport will be delivering the message. Mike writes, “this Sunday we hope to gather and by way of review consider the brush strokes of the Gospel as seen on the canvas of Isaiah. With vivid colors Isaiah paints a glorious portrait of the Gospel of our God; and He does so against a dark and gloomy backdrop – a backdrop of a nation that has forsaken God and gone its own way; a backdrop of judgment proclaimed upon all nations of the earth; a backdrop of the just claims of God against His people Judah. It is in the midst of this backdrop that we find the precious promises of God’s own provision.

  1. The Provision of a Son
  2. The Provision of a Shoot from the Stem of Jesse
  3. The Provision of the Servant
  4. The Provision of a Sacrifice
  5. The Provision of a Savior
  6. The Provision of the Spirit
  7. The Provision for the Soul’s Satisfaction

O that God would grant us grace as a people to see the beauty, the riches, and the glory in God’s provision of Jesus Christ. O that our souls would bask in the delight of this provision even as we see it demonstrated in the marriage of Joshua and Andrea. And may all who gather with us this Sunday drink deeply of the fountain of this provision.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Prayer will be at the Brown’s barn.

After finishing the last verses in the book of Isaiah last week, we will start to consider the summary of what we have been taught through these months in a series of three messages.  The first message is the charges against Judah, the second is the proclaiming of the gospel and the last will be on the promises of Christ’s kingdom.  This week we need to make certain that we have heard why God was filled with wrath against Judah, the ones who were called the people of God.  A majority of the verses in Isaiah are about God pouring forth His wrath because of sin.  We need to hear His charges against them and where they apply to us, we need to repent for the expectations for us are higher than for Israel and Judah.  “Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:28-29).”  But just as the threatenings are greater against those in the New Covenant, so are the promises which we will consider in the next couple of weeks.

This Week at Hope – Fame and Glory, Fire and Favor

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Picture yourself looking from right to left viewing two very different scenes. To the right is a picture of people who have a mother and they are being fed and are rejoicing in the abundance of the kindness of God expressed through one another. To the left is a graveyard with corpses full of worms that do not die. Isaiah is proclaiming that at the end of it, you will see two kinds of people… those who tremble at His Word and are nourished and cherished, and those who do not care for it, and will be tormented in everlasting fire of His wrath where their worm does not die. The outline:

  1. Wrath – v14-18, The Lords indignation is expressed
  2. Sending and saving –  v19-21, God will save and send His worshipers throughout the earth
  3. Final Resolution – v22-24, The permanence of the new heaven and earth and hell

Prayer will be held at the church building. We will eat together to break the fast, then pray together. We will meet at 6:00 to eat. Pizza will be brought in. Prayer will begin at 7:00

This Week at Hope – For All You Who Love the Church and are Loved by Her

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

How is life in the church of Jesus Christ for you? What has it been like? How have you felt about her and acted toward her? The words we will immerse ourselves in this week are for, “all you who love her… and …all you who mourn for her” (66:10). On Sunday we will be studying Isaiah 66:7-14, where the birth and the consolation of the church are the focus. These verses are a continuation of the message of the whole of Isaiah 65-66. Isaiah continues to weave the themes of both of these chapters using his dramatic and beautiful imagery which are characteristic of the entire prophesy. In v 7-9, we are faced with a woman giving birth. But, it is an astonishing birth – no labor. In verse 10, we encounter people are called to rejoice in Jerusalem and Zion. In verse 11, we see a nursing mother. Her child is eating and being satisfied, drinking deeply and delightedly. In verse 12, we learn that the experience of those in the church is like a peaceful river, and people are like a flowing stream. People are now like a flowing stream. Then the Lord shifts the imagery to a child being carried and dandled on the knees of his mother and then in verse 13, a mother comforting a child. This is life in the church. This is the life! Let us prepare ourselves to be a living reflection of these wonderful things as we anticipate coming together again on Sunday to sing and pray and listen and fellowship.

This Week at Hope – The God of Heaven and Earth

Dear brothers and sisters,

Our passage this week (66:1-6) brings us to the last chapter of Isaiah. How fitting it is for Isaiah to end his prophecy with a contemplation of who God is; the worship He desires; and the distinction He makes between those who tremble at His Word and those who refuse to hear. The next portion (which we will probably shift to the following week) will bring us face-to-face with the coming of the Messiah and the birth of the New Testament Church. The last portion of this chapter deals with the fixed eternal state of all men.

Isaiah calls upon us to behold our great and awesome God. As we gather this Lord’s Day, may the Spirit grant us a poor and contrite spirit and a proper disposition before His Word.

Please pray for Scott and Dan as they travel to Phoenix to minister the Word this weekend. We will be postponing our usual first-Sunday afternoon message until the second Sunday. The Lord willing we will also be kicking off our annual Prayer Week on February 14th.

This Week at Hope – Life on His Holy Mountain

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This week prayer will be held at the Brown’s barn at 7:00

Our scripture focus this week is Isaiah 65:20-25 where the Lord continues to explain life on His “holy mountain,’ and describes how He will “rend the heavens,” for His own people.  He is itemizing the various blessings He will bestow upon His people through Christ. This concept is found in one of the songs we will sing on Sunday, “We’re Marching to Zion” where we sing the words indicating we will experience, “Celestial fruits on earthly ground, From faith and hope may grow.” In short, He is making things new as we are marching to Zion. He is restoring and making His people joyful, v17-19. He gives them a new longevity as they are not laboring in vain, v20. He brings a new kind os prosperity and security, v21. He grants them a different kind of productivity, v22. He opens for them a greater level of intimacy with Him, v24. Finally, he creates relationships of love where the cultural divides disappear, v25. These are the things that happen on His “holy mountain.”

This Week at Hope – A New Creation Joy

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

One of the chief manifestations of the gospel is joy – both here on earth and in heaven. Christians are bequeathed a crown of “everlasting joy on their heads,” (Isa 35:10; 51:11; 61:7)and they are filled with the Holy spirit of joy. Our scripture focus this week is Isaiah 65:17-19, where the Lord discloses various manifestations of the newness of life that come with the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The centerpiece of the effect of that power in our text is Joy. This is explained in the use of the following descriptive words, “glad,” “rejoice,” “rejoicing,’ “joy,” no “weeping,” or “nor the voice of crying.” As we continue to work our way through the final messages of the prophesy, we see again the beauty of the kingdom of heaven and God’s wonderful intentions for His people. May the Lord use it to increase our joy in our hearts, our church and in our homes

Please remember to pray for our team in Nigeria… 

Prayer will be held at the Brown Barn. We are recommending that the church have a day of fasting on Wed for concentrated prayer for the church and it’s spiritual prosperity. We plan to break the fast with dinner at the Brown Barn at 6:00 and then pray at 7:00. We will be serving Taco Salad.

This Week at Hope – Lost and Found

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This week we will be focusing on Isaiah 65:1-10, where we learn that God saves people who are not looking for Him, “I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me” (v1). However, while God is “stretching out His hands all day long to a rebellious people,” they continue to do what they please, “according to their own thoughts.” This is what distinguishes those who will be saved and those who will be destroyed.

Don’t forget the meeting on Thursday evening regarding the building. We will start at 7:00. If you are not able to make it, we will be live streaming to members who are not able to make it. Please send a request for password to David Brown.

This week, prayer will be held at the Brown’s Barn.

For those of you who have been praying for Greg Magazu and his family regarding the controversy over spanking, please know that they lost the case. Greg writes, “the judges had a split decision 4-3 and the 3 judges filed a “consenting” opinion.  In the opinion they basically said that it seems like we were perfectly capable to provide a safe and loving environment for a foster child and was called “ideal” by DCF except on this one point.  They went on to say that the system is clearly broken because a couple like us are denied, but a single woman with three children of her own living on welfare AND having a history of domestic violence at the local police station was approved shortly after we were denied by the same office.  She was given 3 foster children and sadly earlier this year one ended up drowning in a bathtub and another ended up in intensive care.” Here are a couplGre of articles in the news about it. http://www.telegram.com/article/20160104/NEWS/160109716#loadComment

This Week at Hope

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Starting the week, we will be reviewing the recitation passages that we have worked on memorizing as we went through the book of Isaiah.  Please review Chapter 1 this week with your family as that is the passage we will be reciting Sunday.

This week, prayer will be at the Brown’s barn.

We are going to spend another week on Isaiah 64:5-12 as we are encouraged with the truth that God meets those who rejoice and do righteousness and remembers God in His ways, but Isaiah is confronted with the fact that that was not Judah. His people were faded like a leaf because of their iniquities.  As we consider their state as Isaiah describes it, it is easy to see the similarities to the church of America in the description.  It is easy to see the desolation that false gospels have caused for the church.  It is easy to remember the glory days of old when those who went before us in this country praised God.  Isaiah called out to God for Him to move and to change things.  Is that what we desire in our day?

For the first Sunday in 2016 in the afternoon teaching, Mike is going to speak on our need to plan and consider what God would have us to do in this coming year, while always remembering and trusting that nevertheless the Lord’s counsel – that will stand.

This Week at Hope – Rend the Heavens

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This week, prayer will be held at the Noah’s. In preparation, Pray through Isaiah’s prayer in Isaiah 63:15-64:12.

God is very kind to give us patterns for prayer. In the same way that our Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples to pray, now Isaiah teaches us to pray, by laying hold of God. Our scripture focus this week is Isaiah 63:15-64:12 where Isaiah prays for his people. It is an urgent prayer for God to move mightily. He desires God to express His power in a demonstrable way, yet he understands that only God can revive His people. This is the kind of prayer that we ought to be praying for our families, our church and our nation.
