This Week at Hope – Drinking Down and Pouring Out

Dear brothers and sisters, due to so many being gone on Wednesday in conjunction with the Conference, we have decided to cancel the mid-week prayer service. We covet your prayers for God’s blessing on the Conference – that we would come away having truly beheld His glory.
On Sunday our text (here at home) will be form Isaiah 63:1-6. The church of our generation talks little of the wrath of God. This omission has greatly diminished the glory of Christ displayed in both His drinking down the cup of wrath on the cross and His pouring out the cup of wrath upon His and His church’s enemies at His second coming. It results in a weak church with a watered-down gospel and little emphasis on repentance; an ignorant church that is unable to understand and rightly apply the Psalms of imprecation; a retreating church that has abandoned the banner held high by the saints who have gone before her; and a fearful church that is robbed of a zealous and victorious spirit even while dwelling in the camp of this glorious Conqueror.
We will consider together how the glory of Christ is exalted in a proper understanding of the cup of the wrath of God in both salvation and in judgment. We will also consider the glory of Christ displayed in the Imprecatory Psalms.

This Week at Hope: Light Without Heat – The Church at Ephesus

Dear brothers and sisters,
This Wednesday, prayer will be hosted at the Browns’ barn.

On Sunday, we will be looking at the Lord Jesus’ words to the church at Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7).  
 
With Ephesus, the Lord finds much to commend (:2-3, 6).  They were the equivalent of the model, Reformed, Confessional church we all look up to – solid preaching and doctrine, and consistent, zealous activity amidst a hostile community.  
 
But He identifies something utterly fatal – something that if left unaddressed will lead to their utter ruin and His judgment.  They had abandoned their first love (:4).  All light, but no heat.  Far from being a trifle, the Lord shows how decay of love renders everything else useless.  Unless this is rekindled, nothing else matters.  
 

Mercifully, the Searcher of Hearts provides the urgent remedy: repentance (:5).  The Good Shepherd points them to the path of life, reminding them of the promises that once captivated them: “To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”  (:7).

For the Sunday afternoon teaching, Scott will be speaking on the glory of our Lord Jesus in lead up to the NCFIC conference.

Dear brothers and sisters, this Sunday we will plan on taking a break from our John and Ecclesiastes studies and spend some time considering how the Apostle Paul described the Christian life as he came to the end of his own life in this world. In his personal letter to his son-in-the-faith Timothy, Paul wrote the following (2 Tim. 4:7-8 which will be our text this Sunday): I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

 
The descriptions we find here challenge the common, present-day views of the Christian life. Do they challenge your views? Ask yourself these questions – ‘Have I gone about my activities, projects, and duties this very day as a man who is fighting, who is running, and who is guarding? Have I demonstrated in my choices this day that I truly am looking toward and waiting for His appearing with an unquenched love? Have my thoughts today laid hold of that which is laid up for me in heaven, which I shall receive?’
 
I must honestly say that I struggle with these things – in fact, I have failed this very day. And I fear that I may not be the only one. So, may the Spirit renew our motivation, remove our hesitation, and destroy every wicked desire. May we be helpers of each other on this journey to the Celestial City.
 
Prayer this week will be at the Noah’s house.
 
Please pray for Scott as he travels to Alaska to minister to the Pepperd family during this difficult season.

This Week at Hope – No Man Ever Spoke Like Jesus

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is the will of God to give you something better than anything else offered by man. He does this in many ways. He calls us out of the doldrums of our feelings and says, “rejoice,” “praise the Lord.” He draws us out of our fear by saying, “do not fear” – the most often repeated command in the Bible. As we come to the end of John 7, we find another aspect of God’s kindness to thrill us. We read these words, “no man ever spoke like thisman’ (John 7:46). These are the most thrilling and helpful words we can ever encounter. God gives us the converting words of His Son. This week, my prayer is that we all at Hope Baptist would experience a filling of the words of Jesus, and that the theme of our minds would be, “No one ever spoke like this to me.” His words are unmatched in wisdom, love, practicality and joy. He did this to deliver us from the underperforming propositions of this world. We ought to be the happiest people in the world to have such good things said to us. This treasure is free. He said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Him and drink.”

This Week at Hope – Come and Drink Living Waters

Please pray for the men gathering for the Father-Son Retreat this weekend…
 
Are you thirsty? In John 7:25-39 we encounter one of the most stunning and lifegiving propositions ever. Jesus promises rivers of living water to those who believe in Him, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”. But what does it mean to, “thirst,” and to “drink,” and have “rivers of living water” flowing out of your heart? This is the focus of our time together on Sunday. This scene takes place during the feast of Tabernacles, where the families are camping out in their booths remembering God’s care for them in the wilderness. At the same time, hatred for Jesus is escalating and the plot to kill Jesus is solidifying. Even so, the Pharisees and the Temple police continue to allow Jesus to teach in the Temple.

This Week at Hope – Seeking our own glory

Brothers and Sisters,

Prayer will be held at the Noah’s.
The lure of appearances, the desire for glory, the fear of man! This is the heart of lifeless and dead religion. Our scripture focus this week is John 7:1-24 exposes people who were caught up in such appearances. In John 7, the scene changes from the previous chapter where Jesus fed the 5000. Six months have passed. Now, it is time for the Feast of Tabernacles and Jesus is with His brothers. They are urging him to go to the feast and make a show of his power. It is through this scene where John shows two kinds of unbelief. First the unbelief of Jesus brothers (v1-9) and second, the unbelief of the Jews (v10-24). What we find here is that their unbelief looks very different on the surface, but in reality, it is rooted in the same thing… a desire for glory in the eyes of men, satisfaction in appearances and the fear of man (7:18).

This Week at Hope – ‘Satisfaction Sold Separately’

Dear ones,

If God’s sovereign hand allows us to gather this Sunday, we will plan on looking together at Ecclesiastes 5:18 – 6:12. God is the Giver of our portion in this life. Rather than spending our life constantly fixated upon and pursuing what we don’t have, Solomon instructs us to enjoy what we do have. And when we can enjoy God’s good gifts, that is a gift from Him in and of itself. For it is possible to have wealth, honor, and gain and not to enjoy any of it – for true satisfaction is not found in the gift; it is found alone in the Giver of the gift. The large print found on the ‘packaging’ of every physical blessing in this world is this – ‘Satisfaction Sold Separately’. Where are you looking for satisfaction?

 
The coming hurricane gave me pause yesterday to meditate upon God’s sovereignty in the affairs of this life. I then took the opportunity to share the following on social media…
 

Florence is in the hands of the Creator of all things and the Judge of the earth. It is under His control and will accomplish all of His purposes. 

Glorify Your name, O Lord. May we bow to Your Sovereign will. May men’s souls find refuge in Jesus Christ just as Noah found refuge in the ark. Root out human pride and make us fall before You in great humility and repentance. Rather than take part in the foolish games of Job’s friends who thought they could understand Your ways and Your reasons in Your providence, may we place our hands over our mouths and marvel at the greatness and rightness of Your ways.

Psalm 135:5-7 – For I know that the Lord is great, and our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places. He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries.

Amos 3:6b – If there is calamity in a city, will not the Lord have done it?

This Week at Hope – The Vanity of Earthly-Mindedness

Dear brothers and sisters,
We will be in Ecclesiastes 5:8-17 this Sunday. In this passage, Solomon is showing us the vanity of a mind and heart set on this earth – whether upon gain or upon honor. If we come away from the house of God has truly heard Him and fearing Him as we should, we will be equipped to flee from the worldliness and earthly-mindedness that occupies the sons of Adam.
The following can be found in the Foreword to Jeremiah Burrough’s book A Treatise on Earthly-Mindedness:
We see upon what weak shoulders the fair neck of all worldly pomp and glory now stands, and how the Lord is winding up and putting an end to the glories of the kingdoms of men, who have not contributed their strength and power to the advancing, but rather to the pulling down and eclipsing of the glory of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Besides what the world tells us, never has an age had more examples laid before them of the world’s vanity than in our days. Therefore, our hearts should sit loose to all things that cannot stretch themselves to eternity.

The Elders have asked Robert Bosley to speak Sunday afternoon on the authority of Scripture. Robert will seek to equip us to defend the Scriptures in the midst of numerous criticisms and to take greater comfort in the inerrancy and authority of the Scriptures that have been passed down to us over many centuries.
Please pray for all of those going to the Forge Conference this weekend in Texas.

Do you think the sayings of Jesus are hard? Our scripture for Sunday is John 6:60-71, where many who have been following Jesus reject him and cease following. Why? because his words are “hard,” or literally, inflexible. The inflexibility of Jesus claims as coming from heaven, and  the only way to salvation, drive them away. It seems that only twelve of His disciples stay with Him and one of them (Judas) stays but is actually, “a devil.” Here is the question: do the words of Jesus seem hard to you, or are they life to you? Do they repel you or draw you? Do love them or loathe them? Do they make you want to run from Him or stay close to Him?

This Week at Hope – What is Saving Faith – John 6:41-51

Brothers and Sisters,

In our passage this week, we encounter the great, “I Am” Statement, “I am the bread of life.  We also learn what saving faith is and how it happens. Briefly, saving faith is accomplished when we are drawn by the Father to Jesus, and we partake of Him. Yet, the Jews complain that Jesus has proclaimed Himself the “Bread of Life, I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (v51).

His Robes for Mine
His robes for mine: O wonderful exchange!
Clothed in my sin, Christ suffere ‘neath God’s rage.

   I cling to Christ, and marvel at the cost:
   Jesus forsaken, God estranged from God.

Jesus is crushed, and thus the Father’s pleased.
Christ drank God’s wrath on sin then cried “‘Tis done!”

His robes for mine: such anguish none can know.
Christ, God’s beloved, condemned as though His foe.
He, as though I, accursed and left alone;
I, as though He, embraced and welcomed home!

Worship With Us
