Don’t forget the daily Fear of God Devotionals… Just this morning we posted one from Jason Dohm…
Pray for the Nicholsons… they are on the way to the hospital now…
Our preaching on Sunday will focus on 1 John 2:12-14 where we learn how the church is a family composed of all kinds of people in different stages of life. John regards his readers as his children and he tenderly instructs them in the life they have together. Notice that there are 3 recipients of the message: fathers, children and young men. Some say he is speaking of particular age groups. Others say he is speaking of different levels of spiritual maturity. Matthew Henry explains it this way, “All Christians are not of the same standing and stature; there are babes in Christ, there are grown men, and old disciples. As these have their peculiar states, so they have their peculiar duties.”
Don’t miss this: the affirmation John brings to his readers. He tells them they are forgiven, they know God, they are strong and have overcome the evil one.
Further, in the context of this chapter we also learn the the great threats to this community are lack of love and worldliness – the subjects that precede and follow the verses we will be covering.
The Songs we will be singing on Sunday are,
The Doxology and All Creatures of Our God and King
A Christian Home
Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
The Power of the Cross
I Know Whom I Have Believed
The Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Praise Him all creatures here below!
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts!
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.
All Creatures of Our God and King
All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
And all ye men of tender heart
Forgiving others, take your part
O sing ye! Alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear
Praise God and on Him cast your care
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Let all things their Creator bless
And worship Him in humbleness
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son
And praise the Spirit, Three in One
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
A Christian Home
O give us homes built firm upon the Savior
Where Christ is Head and Counselor and Guide
Where every child is taught His love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the Crucified
How sweet to know that, tho’ his footsteps waver
His faithful Lord is walking by his side
O give us homes with godly fathers, mothers
Who always place their hope and trust in Him
Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers
Whose calm and courage trouble cannot dim
A home where each finds joy in serving others
And love still shines, tho’ days be dark and grim
O give us homes where Christ is Lord and Master
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung
Where pray’r comes first in peace or in disaster
And praise is natural speech to every tongue
Where mountains move before a faith that’s vaster
And Christ sufficient is for old and young
O Lord, our God, our homes are Thine forever!
We trust to Thee their problems, toil, and care
Their bonds of love no enemy can sever
If Thou art always Lord and Master there
Be Thou the center of our least endeavor
Be Thou our guest, our hearts and homes to share
Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
Am I a soldier of the cross,
A foll’wer of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause
Or blush to speak His Name?
Must I be carried to the skies
On flow’ry beds of ease
While others fought to win the prize
And sailed through bloody seas?
Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace
To help me on to God?
Sure I must fight if I would reign;
Increase my courage Lord!
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy Word.
The Power of the Cross
Oh, to see the dawn of the darkest day:
Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten, then
Nailed to a cross of wood.
This, the pow’r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.
Oh, to see the pain written on Your face,
Bearing the awesome weight of sin.
Ev’ry bitter thought, ev’ry evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow.
This, the pow’r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.
Now the daylight flees; now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life;
“Finished!” the vict’ry cry.
This, the pow’r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.
Oh, to see my name written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death; life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.
This, the pow’r of the cross:
Son of God—slain for us.
What a love! What a cost!
We stand forgiven at the cross.
I Know Whom I Have Believed
I know not why God’s wondrous grace to me He hath made known
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for His own
But I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day
I know not how this saving faith to me He did impart
Nor how believing in His Word wro’t peace within my heart
I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing men of sin
Revealing Jesus thro’ the Word, creating faith in Him
I know not when my Lord may come, at night or noonday fair
Nor if I’ll walk the vale with Him, or meet Him in the air
