This Week at Hope – “Contempt for all the Honorable of the Earth”
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Prayer will be held at the Burke home.
When your whole life and identity is defined by commerce you may receive favor and honor from man, but with God you get “contempt” and “dishonor.” This is the central message of our text for this week – Isaiah 23. This chapter brings to a close the section in Isaiah (chapters 13-23) where the prophet explains his view of the nations to His people. In chapter 23, Isaiah delivers the Lord’s burden for Tyre. In this prophesy, God declares that He will bring down this people who have idolized their commerce and moneymaking. He declares in v9, “The Lord of hosts has purposed it, To bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, To bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.”
The songs we will be singing are below:
Behold Our God
Who has held the oceans in His hands?
Who has numbered every grain of sand?
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come, let us adore Him
Behold our King—nothing can compare
Come, let us adore Him
Who has given counsel to the Lord?
Who can question any of His words?
Who can teach the One who knows all things?
Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds?
Who has felt the nails upon His hands?
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man
God eternal, humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign
Psalm 119:129-136
Thy testimonies I observe,
For they are wondrous in my eyes.
The op’ning of Thy words gives light
And makes the simplehearted wise.
I open wide my mouth and pant;
I long for all commands of Thine.
Turn Thou to me; the mercy shown
To those who love Thy name be mine.
My steps establish in Thy word,
And let no sin o’er me have sway.
Redeem me from the power of man,
And I Thy precepts will obey.
Thy face make on Thy servant shine;
Teach me Thy statutes; for I weep;
The tears in streams flow from my eyes,
Because Thy law they do not keep.
A Christian Home #451
O give us homes built firm upon the Savior
Where Christ is Head and Counselor and Guide
Where every child is taught His love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the Crucified
How sweet to know that, tho’ his footsteps waver
His faithful Lord is walking by his side
O give us homes with godly fathers, mothers
Who always place their hope and trust in Him
Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers
Whose calm and courage trouble cannot dim
A home where each finds joy in serving others
And love still shines, tho’ days be dark and grim
O give us homes where Christ is Lord and Master
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung
Where pray’r comes first in peace or in disaster
And praise is natural speech to every tongue
Where mountains move before a faith that’s vaster
And Christ sufficient is for old and young
O Lord, our God, our homes are Thine forever!
We trust to Thee their problems, toil, and care
Their bonds of love no enemy can sever
If Thou art always Lord and Master there
Be Thou the center of our least endeavor
Be Thou our guest, our hearts and homes to share
In Christ Alone
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone! – who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!
Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched
Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity joined with pow’r:
He is able,
He is able,
He is able,
He is willing; doubt no more.
Come, ye needy, come and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Ev’ry grace that brings you nigh,
Without money,
Without money,
Without money,
Come to Jesus Christ and buy.
Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruised and broken by the fall;
If you tarry till you’re better,
You will never come at all:
Not the righteous,
Not the righteous,
Not the righteous,
Sinners Jesus came to call.
Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness he requireth
Is to feel your need of him;
This he gives you,
This he gives you,
This he gives you;
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.
Lo! th’incarnate God, ascended,
Pleads the merit of his blood;
Venture on him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude:
None but Jesus,
None but Jesus,
None but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good.
