This Week at Hope – Google Advice from Egypt or find the Quietness and Confidence of the Lord
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Prayer will be held at the Burke home.
When you have a problem, where do you go for advice? Whether you are trying to understand how to be saved or raise your children, or do your work or do anything, where do you go for advice? I know, google it. Wrong answer. There are so many places to go. Here is a fact: we are either at the help desk of Egypt or before the bar of the Word of God. There are only two alternatives: we either google for Egypt or we set our minds on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Who is your Egypt? What is your Egypt? Where is your Egypt? These are the questions Isaiah drives us to ask. In Isaiah 30 “Egypt” is symbolic of worldly advice. What does it look like when we have place our hope in the wrong thing? We go down to Egypt for advice – we turn to the world’s solutions. We turn to man when we should turn to God. Why does it happen? Isaiah gives us some unflattering analysis… it is not because we are innocent, it is because we are rebellion (see v1).
There are three major messages that are critical to interpret the chapter.
First, the core problem is identified, “Woe to the rebellious children,” says the Lord, “Who take counsel, but not of Me, And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit” (v1). We are saying that God is not good.
Second, what will happen when we trust in the advice of Egypt is explained. There is an astonishing collapse, “Like a breach ready to fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant. 14 And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, Which is broken in pieces; He shall not spare. So there shall not be found among its fragments” (v12-14).
Third, there is hope for those who turn to the Lord only for all their advice, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength” (v15).
The question for Hope Baptist this week is this: Who is your Egypt? To whom do you go for advice? Am I walking by faith or by sight. Going down to Egypt for advice is walking by sight.
Here is the outline:
I. Rebellion defined, v1-2
II. Shame and Humiliation, v3-5
III. The burden for the animals, v6-7
IV. Make it public, v8-11
V. The result of whom they have trusted, v12-14
VI. What is the solution?, v15-17
VII. It was rejected – they said no to God, v16-18
The songs are below:
‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus #581
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His Word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know: “Thus saith the Lord”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more
O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word,
Just in simple faith to plunge me
‘Neath the healing, cleansing flood!
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more
Yes, ‘tis sweet, to trust in Jesus
Just from sin and self to cease
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more
I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend
And I know that Thou art with me
Wilt be with me to the end
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more
Psalm 62
My soul in silence waits for God,
My Saviour he has proved;
He only is my Rock and Tow’r;
I never shall be moved.
My honor is secure with God,
My Saviour he is known;
My Refuge and my Rock of strength
Are found in God alone.
On him, ye people, evermore
Rely with confidence;
Before him pour ye out your heart,
For God is our defense.
For God has spoken o’er and o’er,
And unto me has shown,
That saving pow’r and lasting strength
Belong to him alone.
Yea, lovingkindness evermore
Belongs to thee, O Lord;
And thou according to his work
Dost ev’ry man reward.
Be Thou My Vision #562
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light
Be Thou my Wisdom and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all
Complete In Thee
Complete in Thee, no work of mine
could take, dear Lord, the place of Thine.
Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
and I shall stand complete in Thee!
Yea, justified, oh blessed thought!
And sanctified salvation-wrought!
Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
and glorified I, too, shall be.
Complete in Thee, each want supplied,
and no good thing to me denied,
Since Thou my portion, Lord, will be,
I ask no more, complete in Thee!
Yea, justified, oh blessed thought!
And sanctified salvation-wrought!
Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
and glorified I, too, shall be.
Complete in Thee, no more shall sin
Thy grace has conquered reign within;
Thy blood shall bid the tempter flee,
and I shall stand complete in Thee!
Yea, justified, oh blessed thought!
And sanctified salvation-wrought!
Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
and glorified I, too, shall be.
Dear Savior, when, before Thy bar,
all tribes and tongues assembled are,
Among the chosen I shall be,
at Thy right hand, complete in Thee!
Yea, justified, oh blessed thought!
And sanctified salvation-wrought!
Thy blood hath pardon bought for me,
and glorified I, too, shall be.
In Christ Alone
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone! – who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!
