This Week at Hope: Sickening Lukewarmness – The Church of Laodicea
Hi brothers & sisters,
We have come to the final letter of Christ to the seven churches of Asia Minor – not for the faint of heart. With hard words, the “Faithful and True Witness” chastens Laodicea, a church that has largely lost its witness and is on the brink of apostasy (Revelation 3:14-22). Due to their state, the Lord labels them “lukewarm”. As a result, He is about to vomit them out of His mouth. The tone of such language in regards to the Lord’s people is hard to find anywhere. What’s so bad about lukewarm religion? What could possibly have gone so wrong? Especially when they thought themselves so spiritually vibrant.
Lukewarm… Lukewarm water is mostly useless: you can’t use it for cooking, washing, drinking or cleaning. It breeds disease. The reality is that they had become room temperature – adjusted comfortably to the darkness of the surrounding culture. Materialism abounded, and Christ had now been crowded outside. But He loves this church, and gives them an opportunity to repent (:19-20), extending to them the promise of restored fellowship, both now and in glory. Christ Himself is the cure.
This week, prayer will be at the Noahs.
By way of reminder, this Friday & Saturday we have Family Camp.
The songs we will be singing on Sunday are:
O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee
Nearer, My God, to Thee
Jesus, Lover of My Soul (Aberystwyth)
O Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer
Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched
May the Lord bless the rest of your week!
